More than a million vehicles will hit Highway 400 alone this weekend in one of the busiest — and deadliest — weekends of the year, police say.

The Victoria Day weekend has the grim distinction of being one of the most dangerous traffic weekends of the year, along with Thanksgiving, Labour Day and the August Civic Holiday.

Over the past decade, an average of six people have been killed each Victoria Day weekend on Ontario roadways, according to OPP statistics.

This year, people fleeing the city should be aware of the high number of moose drawn to the roadways by salt left on the highways, Woolley said.

Those moose, which weigh almost a tonne, are appearing on roadways in communities like Parry Sound, chased out of the bush by a particularly high number of ticks, he said.

I would LOVE to have a story of my life contain the words 'moose and mayhem' in it.
